Workaround for using your CreditCard for purchasing Apps from Windows Phone Marketplace using IDswitch [ Homebrew ]

This image has no alt text

IDswitch Windows Phone

IDswitch Windows Phone

Users have had trouble in the past while trying to add their local creditcard to their windows phone primary live id account, when the primary account they use is a US based account ( and they are not from the US ) and if they happen to use this account as their primary acoount on windows phone. Now it would be a lot easier on everyone if Microsoft allows users to switch the region on their account, sadly this is something Microsoft has been reluctant to do. The folks at xda-dev does not usually take no for an answer and some of them has come up with a work around to get past this issue.

NOTE : I have not used this myself coz I hear the folks at Microsoft are always ready with the BanHammer when it comes to messing around with xbox live services. You have been warned. But if you want to head down this road jump past the break for the full step by step instruction

Winner of the #captionthatlumia Windows Phone Twitter contest announced

WP Central

Ben Rudolph has taken a break from the Smoked by Windows Phone marketing campaign and kicked off a humorous Twitter competition that had users sending in entries to win a Lumia 900. To be in with a chance of winning, an ingenious caption had to be created for the above photo. Should the entry be original and witty then Rudolph would take it into account. Today, the winner was announced on the official team blog.

So what was the winning tweet / caption? See below:

"It took a heck of a lot of scrubbing, but I finally got all the cyan out."

Yep. We approve. That is a pretty good caption. Congratulations to @dnanian for the submission and winning a Lumia 900. Check out the #captionthalumia hashtag for more caption entries. Some good news that followed this contest is Rudolph stated that he'd like to do something similar in the future. Perhaps we'll see some more spontaneous marketing from the team to compliment the smoked campaign?

SMS Backup

SMSBackup is a homebrew tool for Windows Phone that offers an easy and quick method to backup SMS on your device. The app is available for free but you need to have an interop unlocked device to run it. According to the developer first-generation interop-unlocked HTC, Samsung phones and fully-unlocked phones can run it ( If you have a Nokia you could try interop unlock ) . I have successfully run it on my Omnia 7 and the app does backup my SMS messages .. NOTE : I have not tried to restore em back .. I will try that on my next ROM flash. The app offers users the ability to back up to the device ( to the isolated store ) or external backup to your skydrive account.

Here is a hack that I wouldn’t even try but those of you that are into this sort of thing might have fun doing. The hack will give your Lumia 800 (or 900?) the ability to charge wirelessly. It will also void the hell out of your device so please note that you might mess [...]

That was fast: Tegra 3 version of HTC One X gets a CyanogenMod 9 release

htc-one-x cm9

There are possibly two types of people in this world: those who like their Android phone with all the often unnecessary bells and whistles on the software front, and those who like to keep it stock and neat. If you fall within the latter category, the TripNDroid Mobile engineering team has made your Sense-less HTC One X dream come true.

The team has released the CyanogenMod 9 ROM for the HTC One X, which means, you will get to enjoy a pure stock Android experience without a trace of HTC Sense, on top of that sleek unibody and 4.7-inch Super IPS LCD2 display. Although this isn’t an official CyanogenMod release, the ROM was developed using CyanogenMod 9 files.

As in any first build of a ROM of this nature, you can’t expect every little thing to work perfectly from the get go. According to the information listed on the developers’ website, you won’t be able to use the phone’s camera yet, which is a shame, since it’s one of the best features of the HTC One X. For the time being, WiFi hotspot is still not functional as well. Also, the ROM doesn’t include any Google apps.

The good news is everything else works like a charm, which includes the phone’s mobile network (for data, call, and SMS), GPS, Bluetooth, Bluetooth tethering, WiFi, hardware video decoder, hardware acceleration (2D and 3D), audio, and mic.

For now, the CyanogenMod 9 ROM only works for the international version of the HTC One X, or the one that is powered by Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core processor. So, those who own the HTC One X model that sports a dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor will have to wait. If you have the skill and hardware — and know all the risks involved in flashing a ROM on your brand new toy – pay the website a visit for the complete installation instructions.

Mobile payments to take off in Canada by the end of 2012

Canada NFC

In a previous article we published a few days back, we talked about how smartphone payments are expected to replace cash and credit cards as the main payment method by the end of this decade. Following up, if a recent report from Reuters is to be believed, Canada is poised to be there first, as the invasion of smartphone payments is expected to commence there as soon as by the end of this year.

According to Reuters, Canada is currently the leader in developing smartphone payment methods, a title won thanks to the high number of retailers and smartphone owners that have adopted NFC technology. According to Richard McLaughlin, senior vice-president for global products and solutions at Mastercard: “Whether it’s parking, or coffee, or groceries or gas, the acceptance points in Canada are much broader than they are in the United States”.

Statistics show that a decent number of Canadian retailers are already prepared to deal with NFC payments. It is estimated that almost 15% of all retailers in Canada can process smartphone payments in the present, a number expected to rise significantly by the end of the year as more vendors start supporting mobile payments. On the customer side, it is expected that most smartphone owners in Canada already are or will soon be packing an NFC-enabled smartphone. Analysts expect 100 million smartphones equipped with an NFC chip to be sold worldwide this year alone.

As the hardware is almost broadly available, the only remaining task before smartphone payments really take off is a deal between the carriers and credit card companies. Fortunately for mobile-payment enthusiasts, insider sources claim that such an agreement is reaching its final stages, as Canada’s tree largest carriers (Rogers, Telus, and Bell) and a number of Canadian banks are supposedly already ironing out the final details. According to Davin Robinson, head of the business team at Rogers, the biggest Canadian carrier, a mobile wallet solution is expected to arrive over the next six months.

If Reuter’s sources are to be believed, the system proposed by the carriers is fairly simple: the banks need to pay an annual fee to the carriers, and get 100% of the transaction in return. I’m guessing the annual fee will not be set in stone, as mobile payments are expected to gain even further traction over the following years.

It remains to be seen if mobile payments will take off in Canada (same for the rest of the world). As noted above, a solution might be broadly available by the end of the year. However, customers will have to actually use the new tech in order for it to become successful. It remains to be seen if customers decide that paying with their phones is more convenient than traditional payment methods such as cash and credit cards.

What are your thoughts on this? Will mobile payments actually make payments easier to make? Drop us a line in the comment section below!

LG Cloud enters beta May 1st, will make content available on all displays

LG Cloud

Cloud services are, by no means, a new product of the tech world as they’ve been around in one form or the other for many years. But when LG announces that they’re entering the cloud service market, that is something new, since LG is a company that mostly makes hardware, and not software.

The newly announced LG Cloud is an alternative to Apple’s iCloud rather than being a competitor for Google Drive or other cloud storage services such as those offered at DropBox.com or Box.com. Think of it as a personal YouTube app that makes all your 2D and 3D uploaded content “almost immediately” available on your PC, smartphone, tablet, or smart TV.

Here’s LG marketing pitch: “LG makes the devices that millions of people watch content on so we can set a new yardstick for ease of use by setting up our own cloud service. Tomorrow’s consumers don’t want to go to one cloud for music, another cloud for video, another location for photos and yet another cloud for their office files. In the end, our solution is about making life more convenient”, said Havis Kwon, the head of the LG Cloud service.

Content can be uploaded to the LG Cloud from your Android smartphone via the LG Cloud App, from your LG smart TV (using a special app in the LG Smart World store), or from the PC app that you can download from www.lgcloud.com.

A very interesting feature of LG Cloud is that the video content will be converted server-side into the format best suited for the device that renders the content. This technology is called Real-time Streaming Transcoding, and it’s definitely something we’d like other cloud service providers to use in the near future. It’s also noteworthy that the video content will be streamed (and not downloaded first), in order to make the content available for viewing as soon as possible.

LG has announced that their new Cloud service will be available in both free and paid versions. LG Cloud will enter the beta phase tomorrow, May 1.

What do you guys make of it? Useless app from LG ? The best way to stream videos via the cloud? Let us know in the comment section below!

From the Forums: New applications this week

WP Central

We are taking a look at some of this week’s new applications posted in our Applications Spotlight forum. What are these spotlight forums? They are our forums area we dedicated to developers. It’s a place for developers to pimp their new apps.

Gym PocketGuide - 70+ workouts all with HQ guides from Bodybuilding.com - This is what Dominic_W has to say about his app:

“Hey everyone, I recently found a passion for making WP7 apps so I thought why not combine it with my other interest, going to the gym. I wanted to make a quality app for fellow users so I contacted Bodybuilding.com to seek permission to use their high quality workout images (which I received).”

This is a nice app. It includes Programs for different body types, workouts for target areas and even includes stretches to help you get warmed up. You’re going to be listening to Zune music while you work out, right, so why not have an app on your phone to help you with your training?

AppVegas, a new marketplace browser/app finder! - Now this is a fun title. It puts the Windows Phone Marketplace on a slot machine that pays off every time. You shake your phone to start the fun. Then the app gives you a not so random app selection from the Marketplace where you can then tap on the selected app to get more information or shake again to get something else. This app is a fun way to search the Windows Phone Marketplace. This is what SelesGames has to say:

“We released a new app just a couple days ago, it's called "AppVegas" and it is a fun way to find apps and games for Windows Phone. The idea for the app was inspired by UrbanSpoon on the iPhone (for those who haven't used it, UrbanSpoon uses a slot machine interface to find local restaurants). We've *coughstolencough* that concept and used it for finding WP apps and games - a more noble cause if you ask us! Please try it out and let us know what you think!”

Right Size for WP7 - This app added to the Spotlight by Krestor costs $.99 in the Windows Phone Marketplace and it does have a trial version. This app has an easy to use interface as you just pick a flag for your country then the flag for the country you are buying clothes in (Odd, it seems that I am larger in every other country in the world) Krestor has this to say about their application:

“Right Size is a clothing size conversion tool supporting US, UK, European, Japanese and Russian standards. If you cannot take your body measurements right now, you can enter a size you know and the application will convert it into all global size standards. With Right Size, a trip abroad, online shopping or buying a surprise gift for your significant other will be so much easier!”

These are just some of the applications posted this week in our Applications Spotlight forum. There are hundreds more available for you to check out and even give the developer some direct feedback.
